How to set up new Asus router with my Actiontec Q1000 modem?

I just bought a new Asus RT-AC66R wireless router and am having trouble figuring out how it's supposed to be set up with my Actiontec Q1000 modem provided by my ISP. Up until this point, the Q1000 has been used as both the modem and router so my house has wifi. But after I tried setting up the Asus, I've been having connection issues.

I set up the Asus using the install wizard and everything seemed to be ok, but when I pull up my wifi connections, my old network is still listed with full signal strength. I've signed into both, and they both provide me with wifi ... but they're both REALLY slow now. Not to mention that I can't get my Plex server to connect anymore using either network.

At this point, I just disconnected the Asus altogether and went back to using just the Q1000 until I can figure out how this works. What do I do?

You are going to have to turn stuff off in the actiontec. Option 1 is to just disable the wireless in the actiontec and put the asus behind it and let the asus do the wireless. This means though that both devices are still acting as routers and doing NAT. It may or may not cause you a issue...game consoles have the most issues with double NAT. Option 2 is to put the actiontec into transparent bridge mode. You would then need to configure your asus wan port as PPPoE. You only have a single router in this case but sometime PPPoE is tricky to get setup correctly.

I went the tricky route, but so far so good. Set Asus in PPPoE mode and entered my username and password for the Actiontec. Disabled wireless radio on the Actiontec, put it in transparent bridge mode and made sure the firewall was disabled and it totally worked. Thanks man!
