How to set up or configure a repeater

hi to all.. im just want to ask a favor if you can guide me to set up or configure a router repeater to extend my wifi at my home. i dont have a specific brand of repeater yet.. im planning to buy but i have no idea how to set up a repeater by myself. please help me...

My first choice would be to add an access point, only if that is not possible would I use a repeater.

Is it possible to run a CAT5e cable from your router to an area of the house that is in the poor wireless signal area?
