How to setup backup drive?

Hi guys, I am a first time builder. I am installing my OS on a SSD and saving other stuff on a HDD. How would I setup a 'backup saving drive/system'? Would that even be necessary? I have no idea how the backup stuff works... My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate (I don't know if that affects anything but there it is). Thank you very much!

The backup must be an external drive that is connected to the PC when you are doing backups. Backups are absolutely necessary. In Windows 7 you go to Control Panel and then select "Backup and Restore" - then backup. Also create a "System Repair" CD/DVD.

The external drive is connected to the PC via USB2, USB3, or eSATA, depending on what you have on the PC. A 1 TB (or higher) hard disk will work well for backups. Perform backups regularly on a weekly (or more often) basis.

Point it at source and target folders, give it a schedule (2AM?), and let it run.
