Hello, I'm heading home from college for the week and I'm trying to figure out how to get the cat5e outlet working throughout my parents house. The house I'm living in now has it wired throughout as well, but I faintly remember how my landlord got it to work. All I know is that we used a router as a switch and he had me plug a device into each room's cat5e to test the connection.

I'm just wondering how I would get around to setting it up in my parents house. I have no knowledge of house networking so please bear with me. I know for sure that the house has cat5e outlets in many of the rooms so they must lead to a panel somewhere in the house, right? Would I need anything special? Or do I just need a router to use as a switch?

Solution
Well if you have Cat 5e sockets in most of the rooms in your parents house.
Then they should all be wired and end up all at one point.

You can use a router like you say of course.
Or a hub, switch. and also feed the internet broadband connection to it, if using fiber optic, or Adsl for internet.
to provide Access for any computer connected via the cat 5e wall plates in a room.

Typical places for the cable routing where they all lead to for access.
Can be a cupboard under the stairs.
Out to a joined or connected Garage.
The loft.
Or any sort of airing cupboard or set of cupboards in a set room.
Sure you will find the common access point for all the runs of cable.

Yes the cabling goes to a panel probably in a closet somewhere. You would have all them hooked up to a switch/hub/wifi router and then you are good to go. The switch/hub/wifi router should have an uplink port or port that says internet that you connect to the internet service (DSL, cablemodem, ect). Some people might have there cable modem hooked to the wifi router and have the wifi router hooked up to a switch.
