how to show 'mute' on desktop

volume control shows on taskbar, but when I click 'mute' - doesn't show on desktop (or volume increasing/decreasing). Volume WORKS but just doesn't show. Win 7

Do you mean an on screen display for volume? That is often on laptops and is enabled through the laptop venrdor's utility.

This is a desktop - Win 7 - volume always showed the word 'mute' when I muted it; also showed volume increase/decrease when pressed; now shows nothing.... what did I do?

Was this from a keyboard button or from the Windows volume control? It is a utility program that did that, either the keyboard or the computer vendor installed it. Did you uninstall/install/change anything? Look at the support site for the keyboard or computer you have and see what you need to enable this again.
