How to slow down the read speed of a DVD drive?

I have an Asus and a Liteon DVD drives. I burn DVDs at 8x, but during the verification process, the drives speed up and read at their highest speeds, which is quite noisy. I do not mind waiting for the verification process.

How do I slow down the read speeds of the drives? I've tried Rimhill and it doesn't work for either drives.

usually you can't control read speeds. This is because if it has a bad spot it just tries again where as writting you don't have that option.

I seen some util that will limits the speed of opticals but is a permanent setting, not something you can dynamically turn off/on, specially when you only want it during the verify phase.
