I was attempting to clean/speed up my XP with AVG tools. The last step was to defrag the disk. It has been doing so for a week! Yes, seven days, 24 hrs /day. The screen continues to show dots being added, so I know it isn't frozen. Any ideas?
Thank you

If this has been running for days as you say that means it is not really doing anything. At this point I would do a hard shut off of the computer. I don't see any other option.
Welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums!

Hit the 'Stop' or Cancel button ans wait. The process stops when the program "sees" the stop button is pushed, and is able to processes it. The program will only process the stop when it safe to do so. As another safeguard, first the file is completely moved and then if all is well the MFT is updated to reflect the relocation.

This may take a long time depending on how much free space is available on the hard disk.

Do NOT turn OFF the computer while defrag is in progress.

Ubrales, Thank you for your reply. Is the "stop" or 'Cancel' button on the screen or on the keyboard? The screen only shows Windows XP in the upper right and rows and rows of dots that keep being added to. There is no stop or cancel button on my keyboard.

If there are no 'Stop' or 'Cancel' buttons, just close the application but leave the computer ON. After an hour or so, check 'Task Manager' and see what is still running. If defrag has stopped running it is safe to shut-down the computer.

Ubrales,
Thank you again for your help. How do I close the application? There are no buttons on the screen, just the endless dots and I get no response to any keyboard commands that I have tried.
