How to stop windows 8 configuring updates?

I have had my windows 8 laptop for a couple of months, and nearly every time I use it it automatically updates itself, saying 'configuring windows updates' and takes around 1-1.5hrs to update itself. This frequency and length if these updates is very annoying and inconvenient, I tried to turn off automatic updates through the control panel but had no luck. Any ideas? Thanks!

this isnt guaranteed but if you type windows update settings and then go choose how to get updates installed then do the drop box and set it to whatever
