Is there a decent way to temporarily store old monitor in the garage, such that it won't get damaged?
Maybe cover it with some box. Obviously I don't have the original box.

What do you do in this case?

I just traveled with monitors and this is what we did. Put it in a plastic bag like the kind when you bought it. Than we took a blanket and wrapped it and finished with shrink wrap. If it was one of our more expansive monitors we did x 2 on the blankets. But honestly everything made it just fine.

What do you practically use to protect it from falling, dust, moisture?
Don't put it on a shelf where it might get knocked off.

Maybe put it in a plastic bag.

Your question, as asked, has MANY variables.
Winter, summer, climate controlled space, dusty, etc, etc.
"garage" can encompass many environments.

If you get Bubble-Wrap sheets then buy some and wrap it around the monitor. This will also absorb minor impacts if any and prevent possible physical damage due to minor impacts.

It will depend upon what else is there in garage and when and how often you access other things stored if any in garage. If you have some activity there.

What are the factors in mind of OP that can damage an item stored in garage?
Is OP concerned about humidity, temperature, any other physical activity, any other items therein, accessibility, impact due to earthquake and list is endless....

I store(d) 2 monitors in my unheated shed in case one of my 6 monitors (on 2 different computers) stops working.
One of the 6 died and out to the shed I went to grab an unwrapped monitor, nothing covering it, but it was up off from the floor.

Worked fine after I let it warm up to room temperature. It was in the middle of a New England winter when I needed it.....of course!!
It had been out there for 2 years and it was a used monitor to begin with.

I still have a very old DB15 connector 4:3 15" screen monitor for those far and between testing purposes. Stays wrapped in bubble pack just-in-case 11 months of the year for the past 5 years in the garage. Gets 110ºF in the summer and almost 32ºF in the winter. "It's alive!"

cover all ports with ducktape this is first point of contact that allows moisture in the monitor the most and most places corrosion can build up especially in a damp garage.

wrap it in bubble wrap including stand if its off the stand you will have to tape up the hole the stand sits in. as well.

then use a tv cover like this and store away

bubble wrap, cover ports, blah blah blah....

We out here know nothing about:

the garage environment. Winter, summer, Alaska, Ecuador....

"temporarily store" How long is temporarily?

On a shelf, on the concrete floor, dirt floor, in the rafters.....
