so i work at an office that has
2 Core 2 Duo Built Systems
1 Pentium E2180 Built System
1 Acer Aspire XC-710 I3-6100 Built System
1 Intel I5 System cant remember the exact details but its a already built system
1 I3-7100 Pre Built System which i picked the parts and no bloatware.

all connected to 1 Dlink 10/100 8 port switch plug and play.
6 computers, 1 isp modem and one d-link dns-323 nas are connected to the switch.

now the guy who configured the dlink nas, left work without giving the id's and passwords.

i'm the only techie in the office. :)

can i add in another 8 port switch to the dlink 8 port switch, then plug the synology nas in the new switch, configure the synology nas with a new 2 tb hdd, transfer the files from dlink to synology, then remove the dlink from the dlink switch.

thanks to anyone who can help. :)

I see nothing wrong in this scenario. And the HR dept which let that guy leave without providing the necessary followup is to bear the cost of transition.

If that DNS-323 is still working for you (that is, you have access to all the files, and are happy with its performance), you don't have to buy another NAS to recover it. Get a big USB drive (4TB can be had for less that $100), connect it to a computer, copy all the files from the NAS to that drive (and make sure they're there), then just reset the NAS, and restore the files.

it's overheating i can feel it when i touch the cover and it has no 92mm fan at the back. we never turn it off at night.
so what im planning to do is put the backup files/ copies of the database program of the ofc. to an 2 tb. external hard drive. the hdd in the dlink nas is 500 gb. i'll also have to transfer the database program to another computer then share it so its ready for daily use.

then when the synology comes, restore everything back as it was.

and yeah the dlink dns-323 is slow at 10/100 mbps. it will take 10 hours before all of the 500gb is transferred.
so im transferring the copies at a slow pace each night, cause the other office mates really need to use the programs.
