How to tell if a wifi adapter is going bad

My laptop was getting good connection wirelessly. Now I notice it not getting 5 bars. My desktop is around the same area doesn't seem to have an issue. During the summer I did have a simaliar issue with my desktop I ended up moving it around that seemed to solve the problem. do these things have any signs of going bad ?

They usually start freezing up/crashing and need resetting to reconnect. thats usually an early sign.

I have noticed some lag in game

Again that could be coming from anywhere outside your house between you and the server.

Just as a comparison Networks on my desktop are coming in at a higher signal than my laptop in the same stop. I even plugged in the wifi adapt. from my desktop and got more solid strength. Do you think the wifi card is failing ?
