I live in a country where piracy is a pretty big problem. Is there a way to tell if a gpu is pirated just by looking at it? I found a store selling PC parts at a pretty good price, cheaper than the US, but not so cheap that it is a dead give away that they are pirated. i know this is about multiple things and might not belong in the GPU subforum, but a gpu was one of the items.

What difference does it make to you? Can you get what you want at a price you can afford? does it work properly? No, no way to tell unless the seller wants to tell you. Roll with the punches.

Pirated vs cheap knock offs are different.

The difference it makes to me is that I want the real makers of a product to get money from people buying there product. I want something that will work. As mlga91 said there are things I can do to check, at least preliminary.

I'm not in china ;), but it was Nvidea 970 in a correct looking box, (It was opened if I recall, but it looked in order.) The box looked right, like it was nice and high quality, with normal looking text. It was not suspiciously cheap, cheaper than someplace like Newegg, but not like 100$.

O.K. Pirated vs cheap knock off copies are different from each other. You are concerned with cheap, crummy copies, right? Those are easy to spot like fake Rolex watches and the like. The details will show the cheap copy stuff. Pirated means that a legitimate piece made it's way to somewhere maybe without paying tariffs and taxes.
If you are having issues make sure you buy legitimate merchandise from reputable sources at the going prices, right?
