Mobo is msi z270-a pro. The ssd in question is Samsung 860 evo. Ive googled these drives and the boards compatibility but can't find this drive listed anywhere. Ill settle for the wd blue 3d nand 1tb ssd but I cant find it listed as compatible either. Sorry I posted a similar topic about picking an ssd earlier, but if Im going to figure out what ssd to buy I need to know how to discern this and I had already selected an answer.

Yes, that board will take the 860 EVO, in either format. The M.2 or the 2.5".

Is this a new system or already built?
If already built, what are you considering for options to use this drive? What drive is your OS on now?

Well they sure like to hide that info away, not obvious in the website specs or the manual.
It's an M.2 M key with SATA and NVME support so any M.2 SSD should work just fine, one of the motherboard SATA ports is shared with the M.2 slot so you can't use them both if a SATA M.2 drive is installed, but there are plenty of other ports.

And if you are talking about 2.5" SATA drives then there's no special requirement for those, they work on any standard SATA port

It is my current system. Windows 10 on a wd green 256gb ssd is my current boot setup with a 1tb Toshiba 7200rpm hdd. The 1tb ssd is for gaming.

No problem then.
Plug this drive in and go. It will be just another drive letter.
