How to test a motherboard with the components before using the case?

Essentially the title says it all. I have a bunch of computer components but not all of them for another week or two (depending if I can find cheap school books and cheap or even used 4gb ram at the least).

I see some people doing this after they get everything on their motherboard on youtube - and see them putting everything together and hooking everything up and into the PSU but they always glaze over the key detail of how to start the motherboard without plugging it into the case. I have seen one video on Newegg but their motherboard has a built-in "Power" button.

I'm using an ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z.

Right now I have:
AMD FX-9590
EVGA GTX 780Ti Classified
EVGA SuperNOVA 1300G2 PSU
I have but I don't know if it's needed to test boot the Mobo:
Seagate SSHD and Lite-On DVD-RW.

I'm assuming if I can plug all the essentials in and I run an HDMI from my GTX 780Ti to my TV then it'd show me the display but I'm wondering what else I need for it before I get my Kraken X60 CPU cooler.

Does this have some kind of special term people call it because it's insanely hard to find detailed information on it on YouTube or even google.

I just build a new PC a few weeks ago and I saw this video on youtube how to test your MOBO, heatsink, RAM and GPU before installing your components to your case. Look at your front panel headers.. it should label PWR_SW it should be 2 pins (positive and negative).
you have to use your phillips screw driver by touching the pins one at a time. This will turn on these 4 components. My plan is to do the POST but im so ancious to build my first PC.
Hmmm I've heard the girl for Newegg and also Linus from LinusTechTips say something about "shorting the motherboard" but not actually ever show that part...

I've had my components for awhile now since I've been buying each part slowly for the past few months and they all have warranties except for the MOBO because I purchased it off Ebay when it was sold out on every other site listed by ASUS...

So finding out they all work before I hassle with installing them into my NZXT Phantom 820 is something I'm hoping for and something that can save me an hour of time. My largest fear is finding out my Ebay MOBO is trash lol... and if that's trash I'll be PO'd and I might just sell my CPU and go Intel or... hope that there's an instock Crosshair F-Z floating around which has a warranty.

Oh the days where you can't even buy parts from the developers themselves but instead you can only buy them from 3rd parties... Shame.
