How to test hardware health of individual drives that are part of a RAID?

Hi,

I've built a 4 disk internal RAID 5 for my PC using TOSHIBA X300 HDWE160XZSTA 6TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" disks. I'm using Intel Rapid Storage Technology (latest version in Windows), with RAID selected as my storage mode in the BIOS (I have an ASUS X99 Deluxe-II motherboard).

Recently, I've begun to hear a pretty terrible noise each time I write to the RAID, like a typewriter/machine gun, irregular scratching. Here's what it sounds like (ignore the persistent hair-blower type noise -- that's my pump, actually more quiet than it seems in the video; the drive noise is the stuttering / cranking that comes in on top of the pump/fan noise):

I'm fairly certain that one (or more) of my physical disks is in trouble. I'm also experiencing huge slowdowns in write speed when I render big files out of my video editing software to this RAID, I assume related to possible physical failure.

How could I go about testing each of the four to see which is failing? Initially I was thinking I'd get one of those external USB saddles you can plop a naked 3.5" disk in...then write to it using something like Blackmagic Speedtest. But that would require physically popping out the disks, one at a time, possibly breaking the RAID array altogether.

I just wish there was some diagnostic software that could write a few test files to each physical disk so I could see whether I needed to replace one without taking apart my machine.

Toshiba doesn't have any desktop software on their site, though SMART status shows as OK with other software tests.

Thank you for any ideas!
Jeff

Hi,
You can try any third party software for RAID diagnostics. This software can test only bad blocks and bad sectors errors. They can only perform hard drive health test when your hard disk is working fine without any physical damage. This software do not test any hard drive in case of physical failure. To test physically damaged hard drive you need to take the help of data recovery experts because they can save your data even from a damaged hard drive.

Thanks
