How to transfer files from a pc to a laptop

How can i transfer files from a pc (XP) that won't boot to a laptop (Windows7)?

Take the hard disk out of the PC, set it aside. Start the laptop. After the laptop is running, connect the disk from the PC to the laptop as an external disk. Now transfer files.
