Hello, I am trying to transfer files on my external hard drive (Toshiba Canvio - Windows XP) to my new computer (Windows 7), but when I click on the file located on the external hard drive, I get the following messsage: "please select a valid job". How can I transfer all of the old files on my external drive to my new computer?

Does it work when you plug it back into your old XP machine?

Not an error i have ever come across.

If so, could you not just network both machines and move the files across to the new one.

Or have some fun, install VBOX on your new machine, install a XP virtual machine and then connect the external drive to the new computer, that could work as well.

Once the files are off just format the drive so its good to go with the new PC.

If you still have the Toshiba with XP, you can use W7 Easy Transfer Wizard to backup the files and settings from XP and restore them on the new one.
To use the W7 Easy Transfer Wizard in XP:
Browse to the DVD drive on your computer and click migsetup.exe in the Support\Migwiz directory.

Did you ever find out how to do it? I'm using a Toshiba Canvio external hard drive to try to tranfer files from an HP PC (Vista) to a laptop (Toshiba Windows 7) and I can't get anything to work. I, too, am getting that "please select a valid drive" message.

if you do have a windows 7 operating system go to start menu and to accessories and system tools and file transfer wizard and try that its simple and it may just need a simple solution. never know til you try lol if you havent already. just a thought.
