How to trasfer files from an external hard drive into a new computer?

Right, so I had an HP Pavilion Slimline and it got a virus and wouldn't alow it to turn on, so I couldn't back up any of my files, I'm not too computer smart so I kind of destoried everything but my hard drive, now Iv'e got a new computer, (HP Pavilion P6) and I want to transfer my old files rom the Slimline hard drive into the P6 without getting the virus, can this be done? If so HOW?! This is driving me up the wall.

Step 1) verify you have anti virus software running and up to date on your new computer
Step 2) plug in the external hard disk and run a virus scan on it.
Step 3) now you can safely copy any data to your internal hard disk using the Explorer file browser.
