I currently have my desktop upstairs and the main router on the main floor. I want to use my Netgear G54/N150 wireless router as an adapter to be able to get good internet connection.
A model number would be required to better answer. You may have to use alternate firmware. What you want to accomplish is called "wireless bridge" mode. Most Netgear routers don't support that by default.

G54/N150 (WNR1000v4) What sort of alternate firmware do you think would work and how would I set that up?
I don't see any alternative (non Netgear) firmware that supports your router. I don't believe that router can do what you want.
UNLESS, I am mis-interpreting what you want to do... Do you want to use the router to receive WIFI and connect to your PC via wire (which is what I first thought you wanted because of your use of the word "adapter")? OR Do you want to connect the router to a wired connection back to the primary router and have a second WIFI source ?
You can't do the first. You can do the second ...
