How to underclock

Hi,

Here is the problem: My laptop's CPU is overheating. I opened the laptop to clean the fan and change the thermal paste. I even added an extra external fan to suck air from the heatsink.

I still get 100 deg celcius (212F) at full CPU Load (105 is JT) and thats unacceptable.

Is it possible tu underclock my Intel T9400 from 2.53GHz to someting like 2Ghz (which is enough for my needs)?

Usually, any overclock/underclock happens in the BIOS and laptop bios has no option to do so.

Saddly, laptops are not made to last so this is done on purpose (laptop programmed to die), not much more you can do there.

It should not be overheating at idle if the heatsink is on correctly.

You could also replace the internal laptop fans with better ones to push more air at higher rpms

Ok you are all right. But this is a comercial laptop it was supposed to be thougher (its a 2008, it did good so far).

1) No, Idle temp is fine, about 40C (104F), it overheats only on my work load (CPU usage close to 100%)
2) I already use a secondary fan it just gives me 2 more minutes more before overheating (I did replace thermal compound, no change).
3) I will check my Bios for underclocking, I understand that I might be doomed, but that is worth the try!

I would try under-volting before you start lowering the frequency, though given its a laptop chip it might already be at the threshold for minimum voltages.

Fortunately, my laptop is a buisness laptop and there were 3 options:
1)Dynamic frequency
2)Always high
3)Always low

I tried always low and the frequency is stuck at 1,6GHz (at 1V). The good thing is that at full load (video editing) my CPU is around to 70C, which is much better then when I was getting the 105C which is junction temperature.
The downside is that it is obviously slower and the dynamic frequency at idle was able to go as low as 900Mhz and 0,9V. I hope that 1,6Ghz is still good for battery usage and it won't affect idle power consumption.

Seems like a virus to me. I use to have a gpu that would show 99% usage at idle. Reformat it.

No sir, good thinking, but I confirm that my system is clean, the system can idle, my computer overheats when i compress files, edit videos or even make updates through windows update.

The underclock was successfull, the temperature doesn't go over 75C.
