Question How to unlock region in Blu-ray RW?

I just got a disc drive, I would like to watch some of my region locked blu-rays, but I can't decipher what to get and use.
here's what I get when using VLC:

and when looking into the device settings is my RW region free? Or can I not do anything until I pick a region?

I just want to play from the discs. Thanks

Yes, you need to pick a region.
You get to do this 5 times.

So there is no way to make my drive region free? On my own PC?
This seems like Windows is forcing this thing to be encoded.
In this day and age there must be a way of getting around this region idiocy by now.

Maybe a better question how to change it an unlimited amount of times?

Its not a characteristic of Windows, but rather DVD/bluray, the movie studios, and their licensing.

So all drives made are required to only be changed 5 times?
This is a hardware issue?
