I bought this computer back in.. well. lets just say Windows 7 was new. I built it with a friend who knew his stuff.. so I didnt have to learn much at the time. Now I have additional activities I want to do with it which I didnt initially build it for.

I need to figure out if I should upgrade to new components AND/OR if I should change the drives RAID setups or other tweeks for performance, backup or other things.. to get the most out of my desktop

I also get Bluescreen of death all the time, so the push for an update is due to that. ( the problem has always happened, ive just never used the computer much, and it occurs usually when transfering multiple files between harddrives at once)
...

anyways..

Heres the basics of the build. Its about 8 or 9 years old but was real decent at the time.

AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T 2.8GHz
(no heat sync added, didnt get around to it and felt it wasnt critical, but might be now that I want to game with it)

4x 2G RAM (only 4 slots on mobo)

7 HDDs:
- 2x 1TB WD blk HDD(set as 2+0 Stripe/RAID1, only used for OS, program files and temp desktop files.)
- 2x 2TB WD grn HDD(set as 1x2 Mirror/RAID0, used to backup my personal files, photos and camcorder footage most important to me
- 1x 2TB WD grn HDD(used as a media drive for movies and other replaceable files)
- 2x 2TB ... HDD(installed in an external case ,connected through esata to mobo, also set as a mirror drive - initially was to be able to move client files or other important files to/from place to place.)

650W ps,

ATI Radeon HD 5700 series

64-bit OS setup, but running windows 7 ultimate, so really need to change that.

no Network card (ive never connected to internet on it.) all drivers are obv super outdated.

2 monitors

QUESTION: whats badly outdated?

NEW Rig PURPOSE:

I originally only wanted to use it for video editing. Now I would also like to use it for gaming and for streaming from my media server(plex nas?) and netflix etc. but I have consoles, laptops, tablets, chromecast, roku, appletv. so streaming isnt even that important maybe.

I still want to do professional video/image editing (photoshop, final cut/vegas) and audio recording/editing (through a mbox peripheral),

but now I also want to get into casual/heavy gaming on it.(not competitive) I was going to just buy a gaming desktop or laptop.. and leave this computer alone for my occasional video editing, but it feels like im wasting this original computer.

the less I spend on the upgrade the more Ill spend on new monitors and gaming gear.

I dont have a budget, or rather, I don't mind spending whatever it takes, but would rather use the $ for something else if an upgrade would just seem overkill. So lets say keep the upgrades around $1k-2k, not including monitors)

Heres my very basic idea (im not very tech, but can learn slowly)

- maybe get SSD for running OS? maybe another SSD for first line backup? overkill/unnec?

- maybe get rid of the RAID setup? idk.. is it worth it to leave it, or change it?

- get a network card (i never bothered before)

- get heat sync or possible switch to Water.. but wouldnt that mean basically an entire rebuild? (new case, mobo, proc for watercooled? )

- upgrade all the RAM to at least 16gb, maybe more.

- add another 2x 3TB HD. presumably HDD..

- I was also wanting to try to stream my gaming to twitch or YT, and currently use an elgato external capture card... and have heard many use a second computer to stream through than play on

- fully expecting to replace my existing video card.. with 1? or 2x newer ones?

- if I did a full rebuild I would consider a much better processor, or possibly a mobo which supports 2. but already.. it seems overkill. at that point might as well build a 2nd computer just for gaming.

-----------

RAID/file management. The idea was to have OS and software run fastest, with separate drives for backup and general media. I only backed up my media, but not my program files.. is there a standard way to

------------------
I tend to get carried away and am hoping to avoid a bunch of unnecessary upgrades which wont greatly impact my UX. I want to really get good use out of it now, as Im freshly, early retired.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to read through and give feedback

If you took the time to read all this and take the time to correspond and help me figure this out theres an itunes or googleplay gift card in it for you :)

Solution
Everything except storage can be kept and add an SSD. Can't believe you did video editing on HDD for so long :ouch:

GPU price is crazy right now, 1050 ti is only relatively well priced. Add a good gpu and gsync monitor later on. For 2k, I will get this:
