how to upgrade from 32 bit windows 7 to 64 bit

Hi,
I just got a used laptop and it is running 32 bit windows 7 but the processor is 64 bit. I know that you can run 32 bit on a 64 bit cpu but i am wanting to upgrade it to 64 bit because its only using 4 gb of my ram and for the small speed boost from a 64 bit os. so my question is how can i upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit without losing all my data and buying a new windows 7 64 bit os or if there is even a way to do it?

Unfortunately, there's no "upgrade" option here short of backing up your stuff to an external drive and re-installing from a 64 bit source (DVD or flash drive installer).

First check the manufacturer's web site to confirm the laptop will handle more than 4Gb of memory. The motherboard plays a key role in that. If it won't handle more than 4Gb it's a moot question. Also check that the memory is in sockets. Some laptops have RAM soldered to the motherboard. If that's the case it's unlikely to be upgradable.

There is no upgrade for Windows 7 from 32 to 64 bit. You'll have to do a new install and that will require buying a new key. Personally I'd buy a CD so I would have it for later.

Before you start back up your data and round up the installation media and keys and/or links to install programs for any applications you have.

From there it's a new OS install, reinstall your applications, restore your data from the backup, and reconfigure everything as you like it.

Thanks everyone i got a 64 bit key and now my system is running a bit faster and is ussing the whole 8 gb of ram now!!
