How to upgrade to an SSD

Hello, so I recently purchased a 240GB SSD and want to install a clean copy of windows on it then use it with my current HDD, please tell me if the current procedure is the correct one:
1- Connect only the SSD
2- Install windows
3- Reconnect the HDD

However there is one thing, how do I go about wiping clean my HDD? (considering I backed up everything I need on an external drive, such as steam games, music, videos, etc).

After windows is installed on SSD , you can connect HDD and format.

Or better yet format HDD before you take it out and reattach later.
