I've read in other websites that I have to install all updates before 8.1, then go to the Store and update to Windows 8.1. I downloaded and installed all important and optional updates, to the point of not receiving any.
Make a Win 8.1 ISO from your Win 8 key, burn it to a disk or USB and reinstall. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/get-the-iso-you-need-to-create-your-own-windows-81-dvd/

Help and thanks.
It sounds like following these directions will lead you to your answer. It worked for me!
And from what it sounds like, you've done the important stuff already. You should be good to go!
Just go to the Windows Store from the start menu, find Windows 8.1 and update! Just make sure to not interrupt the update process.
Back up all your data first, then create your RMK if you do had not created it yet, then upgrade, after upgrade is isntalled, proceed to install more updates, from windows and your manufacturer driver updates.

Thanks PinchedNerve (ouch!), I was able to update to Windows 8.1 this way and backup my files.
