How to Use Ethernet input cable in a DSL MODEM+router

Hi Friends,
I got a broadband connection with Ethernet cable input, with a single connection only, means, with single LAN output port....that I use for my desktop..
Now, I bopught a Laptop also, so thinking to buy a WIFI Router+ Modem,ie, "D-Link DSL-2750U Wireless N ADSL2+ 4-Port Wi-Fi Router with Modem"... I just wanted to know, Can i use a ethernet input connection with that router..?? or not??

Connect the Ethernet cable from the Modem to the Modem port in your wireless router; it is clearly marked. Now you will have four Ethernet outputs available on the wireless router to connect to desktops, laptops.

In addition, you can wirelessly connect other devices, computers to the wireless network.

So after the above answer I went and checked this is not one of the "special" dsl modems that also has a ethernet WAN port.

This particular router can not be connected to a ethernet port. It MUST be connected to a DSL internet circuit to function correctly. Be very careful both DSL and ethernet are many times delivered on rj45 connections but they are completely incompatible.

So if you have a DSL internet connection coming into your house this router "may" work. Unfortunately there are a couple of variations of DSL. The router you have is the most common with ADSL but there is also VDSL and a number of other and the physical connection looks the same.

Now if what you have is a cable modem or maybe fios where the connection really is ethernet then you need a router that has a ethernet wan port

But I want to use only single modem, i don't want to use the old one with the new one...I just want to use this router as my modem also...so can i use it like dat?

The main problem is you stated you had a ethernet port for your internet. If you really do then you don't need any modem you need just a router. A ISP delivering directly is uncommon but some people do have it.

The key question is what kind of connection did the ISP tell you had when you bought it. You need a modem/router to match this. You do not want to buy the wrong one.

Once you figure that out maybe someone can recommend a correctly router.

I told u buddy, its ethernet port only....and the modem provided by service operator is of single port,again for the same ethernet port connection.. but now, I want to use it as internet port, with a new wi-fi modem, with multiple ports.

hi i m having mtnl adsl modem i connected it with my computer via cabel net but not able to use its wireless connection...
is ther any way to connect it...plz reply asap...

I had the same problem...my modem has an output via ethernet but i had a router which consisted of dsl input.....all you have to do "NETWORK SWITCH".....instead of buyin a new one...this process enables the router to use the network from one of its ethernet outputs instead of the dsl input...."PROBLEM SOLVED".

This is a old thread but. You just happen to be lucky and have a router that has that option. The vast majority of DSL routers do not allow you to switch it to use ethernet ports.
