Hi, I have the Z87-G45 Gaming motherboard and it has HD audio on-board. I have the six audio ports on the back of my motherboard and I'm wondering if their anyway to link the HD audio to the front panel headphone slot. Also, I want the HD audio to be used on my monitor, which only has an Audio In port. So do I hook the cord in the back of my comp to the motherboard?

Solution

Your motherboard should have a header to connect an HD-Audio front panel connector. Many cases have a dual connector which provides connectors for both AC97' audio and HD audio, the pinout is slightly different and the connectors have a different key.

If your monitor has speakers on it, it may be able to receive audio over HDMI or DisplayPort. Check your windows...

Will that HD Audio somehow improve the sound that comes through the monitor?

"HD Audio" is simply a standard codec developed by Intel in 2004 to replace the aging AC97 codec developed in... drum roll please... 1997. It specifies only electrical signals, not quality levels. If you really like you sound, get an actual sound card from Creative Labs or Asus.

Well what about the audio boost on my actual motherboard? It acts as a sound card?

It's a sound card, but it's a very primitive and low quality one compared to a discrete card from Creative Labs such as the X-Fi Titanium series.
