Hello ,

Here's the Existing setup:

1. I have a internet cable that comes in to the home from one corner.
2. The line is connected to modem which creates the WIFI network.
3. I have a samsung c series LCD TV(2009-2010 model) which has LAN port.
4. My wifi modem is too far from TV, and i can't use the cable to connect to TV.

This is what I am thinking of doing:

I want to buy a wifi repeater and place it near TV . Then, I want to connect my TV to the repeater with RJ45 cable. The repeater can strengthen my existing wifi signal (Which I use from laptop and phone), and can also provide connection to my TV through wire.

So my question is ,

which kind of repeater should i use ?

Is there anything required to configure for the wifi repeater?

(as explained above other than giving power supply to wifi repeater and connecting it to TV with LAN , there is nothing i can do actually.. am i correct?)

Also there are many wifi signals nearby ,so repeater will try to strengthen all the signals?
Also what ip details should i give in my TV?

Thanks,
Ravi

What you want is called a client-bridge. Many repeaters have that feature or you can buy a dedicated client-bridge.

You can also run many with the repeater and bridge function at the same time but it is not a good idea really. It does not magically increase the WiFi signal you must have good signals from the main router at the location you place the device. You could I suppose run a long ethernet cable to it if you could place it somewhat closer to the main router.

Unless you have no other option I would not run it as a repeater. You may get stronger signal on your phone and laptop but the quality of that signal will be degraded by the repeater transmitting a internal interfering signal. So it may be stronger but the actual data rates you get may be less. In general you will see at least a 50% drop in the speed and it can be a lot more in some situations.

Pretty much you only want to use a repeater to send signal to a area that already has no signal. Then you have to consider any signal is better than no signal at all so it can't be any worse.

Thanks for the reply..

My wifi modem is at one corner and TV another corner( just 10-15 meters) of the room, but i don't want to run a cable across my room.I will run this repeater just to connect to TV.

I am still not clear regarding ...

1. what is that device i should buy (is it called repeater or bridge ..etc)

.2 .what IP details ,i need to enter in my TV .

Thanks

It would be nice if they called them by a fixed name. A bridge,repeater,client-bridge are all different devices but you can buy things that can do one or more of these functions.

A example of a device I use that can do all is a tplink TL-WR702N, this is actually a travel router. Netgear tends to call these products universal ethernet adapters something like Netgear WNCE3001 this device though only does that one function it can not run as a repeater.
