How to use laptop to read data from HDD of a dead desktop

Hello,
My desktop fail to reboot and i am not sure why.
I want to retrieve data on its sata HDD using my laptop. How to make the connection. My laptop has usb,esata slots.

get an external enclosure, many can be bought for <$25.
put the desktop hdd in it, turn it on and plug the usb2 or esata cable into your laptop. it'll pop up just like a flash drive.
