How to use sd adapter from phone to laptop

Hi, I took my sd card out of my phone into an adapter that came with the mini sd card. Opened the file on laptop but nothing will open, no photos or videos show. I do not know where to even find my problem online. Can you help please?

Thank you so much for your help. I first tried putting the sd card into an adapter and when I opened it on my laptop (HP windows 8) the files are there but when I click on them message reads no files. Though when I right click on the file it shows I have photos. Weird. I then attempted to use a usb cord the same happened. I am pretty sure I made it to where the photos and videos are saved onto the sd storage device. I am stuck. PLEASE HELP?????? TY

Not sure what I did now. I am very confused. I read your message then attempted to connect the phone to my laptop
and still under the sd card no files. then I clicked at the camera and and then clicked DCIM and found all the pictures and all the videos are now pdf's!!!!!!!!!! All of them! I tried to right click on it to maybe( open with) that didn't work. I am at a total loss. Please if you can help I would appreciate it much! TY

To be clear, when I stated I clicked on the camer I think its because I used a camera cord to connect my phone and so yeah that is how I connected the phone to my laptop.
