Hello,

How to use static wrist strap band while building a new computer? I have a carpeted floor. During building the new computer, where do I have to clip the alligator clip?

I appreciate your help.

Thanks.

Simple answer is that you don't have to. All components have circuitry that's designed to make them very hard to damage via static shock. Empirical tests show that you practically need a tazer to fry a chip that way. In over 20 years of PC building I have never once damaged a component from ESD; plenty of times from other carelessness but never from static. The amount of static created by a carpet is not sufficient to damage PC components.

If you want to use a strap anyway you have to clip it to the frame of the PSU. If the case is solid metal, that will do as well. The PSU must also be plugged into the wall with the AC line breaker turned off (the one on the back of the PSU, it's a big I/O switch). If the case is not plugged into the wall then you might as well not wear it at all!

Needing a wrist strap to build a PC is mostly just an urban legend.
