How to write a read only disk drive

I am on win8 and I have a 160Gb external disk on USB. It comes up as RAW. I tried RECUVA but it would not work. I tried formatting but it is read only disk drive.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Try manually assigning a different drive letter to it. Whilst I know how to do that on XP, Vista & Windows 7, I don't have Windows 8 so I can't explain how to do it on that, but if you know how to get to "Disk Management" that's where you do it.

Use DiskPart to clear the Read-only flag: http://pario.no/2011/05/23/clear-read-only-flag-on-disk-in-windows-7-using-diskpart/

When complete you should then be able to format the drive.
