How far will i need to drop the settings from what is needed on a 1080p display to run the game smoothly? Like in far cry 3 i have a mix of high/very high to play 1080p. Would i need to drop to medium to play it smoothly? And can i change the resolution to 1080p if it troublesome?

I'd suggest lowering other settings before resolution. 1:1 of pixels displayed to native resolution is really ideal.

Hmmm doesn't seem to bad, I can always get a second card for sli or turn down the resolution. Are games a lot better on 2560? I can get a 27" cinema display from my friend for $500 since he works at apple. Is it worth spending an extra $300 over a 24" 1080p resolution monitor though? I have not played games on 2560 just seen the displays in store and they are really nice, but don't seem to be that much better over a $200 ips 24" monitor.

edit: I'll be using it for mostly gaming (bf4, gta5, when they come out) and school work.

Some people don't notice or care about a higher pixel count. The cool thing about higher resolutions in regards to performance (despite the need for more GPU power) is that you don't need anti-aliasing as much. More pixels inherently means less jagged lines, in a sense, you get free anti-aliasing.

$500 for a new 27" Apple Cinema Display is a great deal. I think you would really enjoy that display.
