How well can a GTX 980 run on a 1440p monitor?

I am looking to buy a new monitor but don't know if I should get a 1440p 144hz with gsync or 1080p 144hz with gsync because I don't know if I can run 1440p well enough for it to not be super choppy.
Thanks for the help in advance! 😉

Solution
It runs it fairly well at 60 FPS, your not going to max all games out and keep 60 but it runs it just fine. I have my 1440p monitor on the way and will be using a 1080p monitor with it on the side for other things.
Here is a decent video showing FPS in games at several different resolutions 1440p included notice the in game settings are usally maxed out.

I would just get a 1440p with 60 refresh rate it will work just fine their no reason to get 144 if you can't push that

Yeah it should do pretty well in most games, your not going to get 144fps unless you can sacrifice some eye candy but it wont be choppy. I would turn down MSAA if your game uses it as you don't really need it for high resolutions and its very taxing to run at 1440p. I would go with the 1440p monitor personally and maybe upgrade the gpu down the line if you feel it doesn't cut it.

Just to give you an idea, I run a single 1440p on overclocked 970s in SLI (each 970 is within 92% or so performance of a 980). Witcher 3 runs an average in the 70s, dipping down below 60FPS on occasion (Hairworks off). On the other end of the spectrum Star Wars Battlefront and Grid Autosport run 120-130FPS. Other games fall in the middle of those extremes between 70s and 120+, like FC4, Crysis 3, and Project Cars. This is with all game settings maxed and ultra with 4xAA (sometimes FXAA in Nvidia control panel for games that support it + 2xMSAA).

With that said, since my monitor is only overclocked to 80Hz, I run V-sync on in the games. This is exactly where a nice Gsync monitor would come in handy to be able to use those extra FPS between the different games.
