I'm thinking of buying a Gigabyte GA-G31MX-S2 motherboard. How well does it overclock Intel E2180 CPUs on PC800 DDR2 memory?

Have you not heard of Google?

"The GA-G31MX-S2 is absurdly cheap and it'll be absolutely fine if you're building a basic Core 2 Duo PC for your mum. However, gamers, home entertainment enthusiasts and overclockers should give it a wide berth."

Yes, I've tried google. But I would like to hear from other users their experience in overclocking this motherboard.

What memory multipliers are available for FSB 800 CPUs? Does it need PC1066 DDR2 RAM to overclock to it's max potential?

If your only looking at doing moderate overclocking on this board, then it isnt too bad.
I have pushed an Intel E2160 from 1.8ghz to 2.61ghz and it is completely stable. In fact, it was running at 34 degrees celcius / 42 at load.

This CPU can be pushed to beyond 3ghz on stock cooling, so it appears to be a motherboard (perhaps chipset) issue to not go further then what it did. I was using generic DDR800 memory, and this is with a FSB of 1160 which is still below the max of DDR800 capacity.
With the original bios, it only went as far as 2.56ghz, it was when i upgraded to the latest bios (F3) that it went to 2.61.

Still, even at that speed, it was able to complete SuperPI 1m in 23.406 seconds which is brilliant!

See the screenshot at: http://www.dcroci.com/images/e2160@2.61ghz_ga-g31mx-s2_18.10.07.jpg

I'd have to say that if your only looking at doing moderate overclocking, for $100 australian, this board is excellent value!

this thing overclocks well and has custom memory timing options! i just installed one. I just bought it tonight at microcenter. I have a core 2 duo e4500 m0 stepping running at 3.1 ghz (1.35 vcore) 930mhz(2.1v ddr2v) on the memory. Most of the problems that i have had have to do with the memory. Remember this is a gigabyte board. So to access all of those fancy performance features you have to hit ctrl+f1 in bios. I recommend this board to anyone making a shuttle style pc or entertainment pc. I have not evaluated the onboard intel video card. I installed a ati 3850 256mb.
