Just like the title says, my friend found a good deal on an r9 290, and he was wondering how does it perform in today's games at 1080p? He found it for $200 on newegg.
Not worth it. You can get a 970 for aroung that, or, better yet, up the budget a bit and go for an RX 480/GTX 1060.
He said he can't find the 480 anywhere and he's tired of waiting. It's been almost a month since released and still no aftermarket cards. And where can he get those 970s around that price from?

Ebay. Not new.
Your friend should be pacient or he will have severe regrets later if he gets that old card.

Okay. He'll start to look on eBay for some cards. He said he's just pissed that AMD hasn't released their cards yet. Why do you think they are waiting so long to release their cards?
The end of June event was a paper launch, so nothing was ready to ship to consumers at that time. From what I've heard, there's no fab issues, just high demand, much like the 1080 and 1070 had at launch, so stocks are limited/prices are up on the RX 480

It's about demand and production capacity. Beeing p****d at a company and punishing oneself is childish. Like i said, your friend should wait or get a SH 970. The former beeing preferable.
