Hi guys!

I am thinking of buying a gtx 1080 but i need a second opinion. Can someone please tell me if my frames will be about 60 on: 1080p, 1440p and 4k ( I am pretty sure I know these results my self but I need a second opinion ;) ) and, because I am lazy can you check if it will fit in my case ( bitfenix comrade)

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P

RAM: 32GB Hyperx fury no overclock running at 1866MHz

CPU: AMD FX 6300

PSU will be okay

no need to include anything else ( if I am not forgetting anything ;) )

Thanks for your response.

-Alex.

too weak, horrible bottleneck

need a complete rebuild for a 1080

max you should put in ( if overclocked ) is a gtx 1060 and even then you would not see full performance from it

It will fit in the case. What games are you playing? FYI - this will be perhaps one of the more nonsensical upgrades of the day.

EDIT: Something like a 7970 would be more economical, given your 4-year old platform.

A rather unbalanced system. The only situation where you might not get bottlenecked too badly by your old and weak CPU is if you run all your games at 4K, as at that high a resolution you're only going to get around 40FPS anyway on a lot of newer games with a single 1080. At 1440p and 1080p the GTX 1080 would be pretty badly held back and you're likely to struggle on some newer titles to hit 60FPS because of your FX 6300.

A new CPU won't help mate , an aftermarket cooler & a big overclock will.

For 1440p 60fps a 1070 is a viable buy for even with an overclocked fx , a 1080 just isn't though.

If you have the funds for a 1080 & a 4k monitor then really you should be rebuilding to an Intel from the ground up though.

A 6300@4.3/4.4ghz will push 50-60fps on every title out there bar a dozen or so.

There aren't really any upgrade options for you. You could get an 8 core FX CPU, but that won't really improve your gaming performance all that much, as few games actually scale across that many cores. Right now the only real CPU upgrade option you have is switching to Intel, which means new motherboard, CPU, and new RAM as well unless you buy an older Intel motherboard and processor.

Sorry I don't relay know much about Intel I am more of an AMD builder. I don't realy do many upgrades and don't deal with intel at all. Why would I need some new RAM?

Your current system runs DDR3 RAM. Current Intel platforms run DDR4 RAM pretty much exclusively. Previous generation Intel processors on the LGA1150 socket were the last ones to support regular DDR3 RAM.

They work well, the performance difference between the older Haswell CPUs and the current Skylake CPUs is pretty small. At minimum you'd want to grab one of the Core i5 4xxx CPUs, preferably one of the higher clocked models like the 4590 or the 4690k if you want to overclock. The cheaper models that run at lower clockspeeds like the 4430 can be a bottleneck in some CPU heavy titles. If you do choose to overclock, you need a CPU with a K suffix eg. 4690k or 4790k and a Z97 chipset motherboard. If you don't want to overclock or don't need SLI support you can look at cheaper chipsets like H97.

The 390x and the 980Ti are slower than the 1080 and wouldn't be held back quite as badly, but you still wouldn't get the full performance out of either card unless you're running at a high resolution. Your CPU is going to be your limiting factor for your framerates unless you plan on running your games at 4K.

Okay. I have talked with some people i know and I think I will go with a new intel mobo (supporing ddr3, so older one) and I will get a new CPU. Sorry i am asking for so much but please could you provide me with a good cpu, like i said before I don't relay know much about intel.

Sorry for the very late reply. I have had a lot on. I am willing to spend about £300-400 on the upgrade, gpu not included, I may be staying with my r9 270x's but what would be one of the best upgrades with that price tag, looking at more £300 than 400. Please may you all consider that this is, of coarse, with the mobo included; I am not looking for one that is that high end. Please include a nice CPU that i can consider that I can use my DDR3 RAM in the mother board,so the right socket for the board :p.

Thanks for you help.

I'm a budget gamer, as such I have years of experience trying to milk the most out of an older system. My suggestion to you is to consider your priorities. You are talking about a top of the line brand new GPU while your system is already out of date. You are well past the point where just dumping a new videocard in there is going to make sense.

That said, if you do decide to start over, immediately hobbling yourself by declaring DDR3 support a priority makes no sense. Yes it would cost money to buy 32gb DDR4 ram, to duplicate what you have now. But if you can spend what it takes to acquire a 1080, how is the price of ram a problem? Do you really need 32gb ram right now? What kind of work are you doing that you need 32gb but not a faster system overall? I think you'll have a hard time accepting advice because no one would advise doing things this way that you are doing them.

Like i said in the last post, I may be staying with my 2 r9 270x's for the time being. When i was buying my RAM I was able to buy as much as I wanted, so I chose the most amount :p. I am aware that I may not need that for what i do with the pc but i just thought "why not." I have been thinking a lot recently and getting a 1080 is not needed. I do think a gpu upgrade would be needed but maybe not to a 1080, but I would want to be able to have to option later. As I said before i am not very knowledgeable with intel so, if you don't mind, could you link a possible motherboard replacement with a cpu? Depending on how long it will take you could you do one for both versions, one that supports ddr3 and one that supports ddr4? Just so i can keep my options open.

Thanks.
