How would i test network switches?

I work in an I.T company as an apprentice and currently i'm basically the only on-site repair engineer they have. I mostly deal with laptops and PC's.
We have a shelf with a plethora of network switches and sonic walls that no one is sure of if they work properly so ive be told to basically figure it out.
I was hoping someone could tell me some steps to follow in order to test a switch. The one i currently have is a HP-1810-24g, a 24 port managed switch.
What would i do to test full functionality. Thanks in advance.

Really your IT company is asking you test managed switches without guidance or point in the direction of the software to use ?
Not much of a company if you ask me.

I would assume Hewett Package does the same, perhaps time to contact your local HP representative and ask him about support for the hardware you have and that needs to be tested.

Well I sure hope the HPs are easier than Ciscos, which really requires you to have the proper certification to play with them. The Sonicwalls may have license attached to them, for a limited number of LAN users. Tell boss to let you troubleshoot something live, that's where the real fun is.
