my friend and i are going to assemble my new rig tommorry.
my cpu is a opty 165 how well does the fan work for overclocking it looks pre nice i guess
550w power supply
1 gig ocz gold
asus a8n5x mobo

fans have nothing to do with overclocking...the only time a lower temp will help is when you go subzero. a nicer hsf will only give you 10c max in lower temps which might help you stay under 60c.

i overlooked the fact that he has an X2, but the truth is for single core athlon 64s, the stock cooler is good enough. lower temps might be nicer, but full load in the low 50s aint goign to kill you. And i would also like to clear up the misconception that some people have when it comes to overclocking, a chip that overclocks well is the luck of the draw, if its a bad chip, no fan is going to help you.

That is absolutely incorrect; lower temperatures can make all the difference for overclocking. A high quality air cooler can lower load temperatures considerably and translate to a very real difference in clock speed. This is especially true for graphics cards.
graphic cards are a whole different story. Temps are hardly a matter for athlon 64s at 1.5v. Prescotts and bartons are the ones that need the extra cooling

Bad is an opinion... my opteron 165 only hits 2.5-2.6ish ghz and while thats not realtively good compared to some of the newer CCB1E's and CCBBE's its not horrible either... thats 800mhz OC over stock and the status of an FX-60.. nothing to sneeze at.

The 165 comes with the 4 pipe heat pipe cooler. I've applied MX-1 to it and have 2 120MM exhaust fans in my system. Average idle temp is 29C and average load is 36C (at stock of course). Aveage idle temp at 2.4ghz is 31C and average load temp is 44C. I think it does well.

I recently calculated the cost for a good watercooling system. These prices are from frozenCPU.com

Thermaltake Bigwater-135.00(This is the one with the dual radiator not the 5.25 radiator.)
VGA block-50.00
Non conductive coolant-30.00
Cool lighting and such.50.00

So without the cool lighting and sleeving and crap you could get a good watercooling system for like 220 bucks 😀
