hp 15 and ssd upgrade

Solution
it clearly has sata III ;), no bottleneck there

Answer is a clear yes.

two ways to go:
replace the 1TB HDD with a SSD or SSHD

second way:
replace the optical drive if not needed with the existing 1TB using a HDD caddy and place a SSD into the primary HDD/SSD slot
Hey there, Samantha.

I see no reason for you not to be able to upgrade it with a SATA SSD. However, if your laptop is using SATA II instead of SATA III, the SSD should still work properly, but it will be bottlenecked a bit by the older SATA interface. Don't get me wrong though, you'd still see a great performance boost even if this is the case.
I'd recommend that you get in touch with the laptop manufacturer's customer support and ask if they have any recommendations for maximum drives size or models, so that you rule out any incompatibility issues.

Hope that helps.

Excellent advice!! I think I might go with option two and run system. From SSD and store data on 1tb. Thing is I know these new HP 15 laptops are quite thin and don't offer much room for these options..are you familiar with this model type laptop you think this route is 100% possible??

If this is your service manual you can see how to remove the optical drive: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03939658.pdf
Looks like you could just get something like this http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=page&id=7 and put in the second drive.
Here is one on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/SATA-Driver-Adapter-12-7mm-DVD-ROM/dp/B01GM9DWAW/ref=sr_1_34?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1472823212&sr=1-34&keywords=hard+drive+cd+drive+kit

Only thing to watch for is if the faceplate on your optical drive can be easily removed so you can transfer it onto the adapter.
