[SOLVED] HP 242 G1 processor upgrade

Solution
CPU options and supported RAM configurations are listed here:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-242-g2-notebook-pc/5405436/document/c04136525

Supports 16GB RAM? --- Yes (install 8GB in each of the two slots).
Actually, this is for the g2 version and OP has g1:

It looks like one person has done the 3630QM, but the processor has a higher TDP than the top factory spec i5-3230M, so cooling may be an issue unless you run the fan at 100% all the time:

Just slightly more common (2 hits vs 1) is the i7-3520M, which is the same TDP as the factory i5 mentioned above so cooling should be no issue...

Almost any processor upgrade from the i3 will feel like a huge difference, even if it isn't the 3630QM:

The biggest advantage of the 3630QM is that it is a true quad core:

For single threaded applications or just doing one thing on the computer at a time, the i7-3520M would feel the fastest, but not by much. But running a modern os like win 10 that eats cores like candy, the 3630QM would feel faster because it has more cores to deal with the os interruptions. The higher TDP of the processor is the problem though:

The biggest thing you could change quickly and immediately would be to upgrade the ram to 16GB. That would free the system quite a bit. That coupled with any processor upgrade will certainly wake up the machine.
