Hi tjere shops selling ex uk ex us pc's and i saw this Hp 500 Mt desktops Towers with these specs so i was wondering can i upgrade the ram to perhaps 4gb or maybe 8gb and use it for stuff like ms Office and will it run win 10 smoothly? I might use it to play my old games like minecraft and some basic requirement games. Thing is i wanted to know if this is a full tower incase i want to change the motherboard after some time or maybe change the core 2 processor to some core i3 or 5 just for playing old games, watching movies, youtube and ms office like excel, word and power point. Here the current specs:
2.8Ghz Duocore

2gb ddr3 ram

160gb Hdd

Dvd writer

I am getting it for about 85$ with win 7 installed. and thinking of i can upgrade it to a 1tb harddrive and 4gb ram for now and maybe later on change the processor or even change the mobo and use all the old parts(hard drive ram psu ) and get a nice graphics card on that new mobo like ''gtx 990'' i think, the newer models are being chewed up by crypto miners and they cost like a barrel of gold . So what do you guys think is it a good buy i can upgrade? This is assuming the motherboard is remove able coz i once saw a generic tower (a clone ) long time back which was maybe glued into the case and the processor was somehow soldered on but i think oems like hp leave them to be changeable.

Hi

I found this thread by looking into google search about this model as someone in my area is selling one cheap and I 'm trying to figure out how far can this be upgraded.

To the OP
I would not buy it anywhere near the asking price of 85$, it is too much for the specs.
'My seller' is asking for 40$ - E5400 cpu, 2 or 3 gb ddr3 ram, 500hdd, licensed Win7 (probably 32bit he didn't mention), DVD writer, USB mini WiFi drive, looks very clean and preserved, even comes with the original Win CD+ drivers. I plan to lower the asking price to 30-35 max, and he will probably go for it as there are many others trying to sell similar models.

So far I found out this is the basic spec for this model, nothing special. Still trying to figure out...
You would NOT spend much money upgrading a system like that. For $85 it's a no-brainer though.

2GB is sufficient to run W10 for light office applications and a browser tab or two. My dad has a laptop with 2GB which we upgraded with an SSD and W10, but open too many tabs or any demanding task and the 2GB is insufficient.

I'd probably get another 2GB or 4GB stick depending on the cost (note motherboard probably supports only up to 4GB sticks).

But again upgrading CPU etc?

At that point it's:
a) CPU
b) motherboard
c) DDR4 memory
d) new copy of Windows (likely; it's confusing)
e) new HDD or SSD
f) graphics card?
g) power supply?

That leaves the case so really you are building an entirely NEW PC if you want to change much.

Any dual-core CPU + W7 (or newer) with 4GB+ system memory is fine for office and very light usage.

By the way, you can't change the core 2 processor to an i3 or i5, those are completely different mounting. If you currently have a core2, it means it is a LGA775 motherboard, the most you will be able to install on it will be a Quad cpu (Q6600/Q6700- Q8400 or higher depends on supported fsb and bios), can't tell you which one is supported since I don't know the exact motherboard model yet. More ram to 4gb would be an easy upgrade.

Good Luck

Edit:

Found out additional info here:
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/370846/Compaq-500b-Mt.html

Seem like this model can only be upgraded to 4gb ram max (1333mhz)
The listed CPU for this model include Q8300 (page 2), so I assume a Q8400 will fit as well (same bus 1333, same tdp 95w) might even be able to install some of the Q95** CPUs, not sure yet.
This model has a 300W PSU, guess that is enough for its basic uses, but will probably need to be replaced and upgraded if the plan is to add a power hungry dedicated GPU.

Hope this helps, good luck
