Hp 8100 Elite sff and amd radeon r7 240 2gb

I am having issues with running this video card on my motherboard the card only uses 31 watts and the pciex16 allows maximum of 35 watts when I boot pc the fan on the gpu turns for a moment and then shuts of no video no nothing...now there is no setting for vga in the bios but it states on the hp site that when the device is connected that option becomes available I cant seem to find this in when I have the video card inserted if anyone could help would be great thanks

It could be a defective card. It could also be a poor PSU. Although even the 240W PSU that the system comes with should be enough. Does the system run OK with the card removed?

yes I have found out that it is indeed 75 watts I also found out that on this motherboard they have pcie turned down to 35 watts wich is horrible I gave the computer to my friend who poped in a 1 gb card and runs no problem thanks for the help!!

well I'm glad you see it cause most don't get it and get told vid card upgrades ok and most find its not and end up black screening heres what I post to guys wanting to upgrade prebuilts

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..


you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers
