I have an HP Elitebook 840 G2 that I don’t use very often and today when I started it up Iran for a few minutes and then suddenly shut down. It seemed to try to restart and then stop.

I opened the bottom cover and removed the battery and reseated it and, when I started it up it ran. & did the same thing. Seems like a cooling issue?

I let it cool for a couple of hours and started it back up. This time I had a warning that the time was wrong so I synchronized that. All ran well but, again, it stopped after about 10 minutes.

Could all this be due to a dead CMOS battery? Or, could this be due to a bad fan / heat sink assy?

Let me know your thoughts.

You might want to see if the laptop's cooling solution needs a cleaning off of dirt/debris clogging the fan/vents of the cooler. You might also want to replace the thermal paste(not the pads, unless you have like for like pads in hand) and see if that helps with the laptop's uptime.

Seems to me like the laptop doesn't have a CMOS battery since you disconnected the battery from the laptop.

How old is the battery in that 840? The symptoms you describe are those of a battery that is well past its expiration date. They're only good for at most 3 years when properly cared for. And as above, they do not have a separate CMOS battery. They rely on the main battery and have an electrolytic capacitor to act as a short term backup when the battery has been removed for service or replacement.

Thank you for the response!

I pulled the battery and it looks like it's got a mfg date of December, 2014. You think I should get a new one and see if that fixes things? The HP Battery Test in the HP Support Assistant says it's ok but if these are the symptoms it could explain a lot -- I don't use this laptop ofter and the date / time needing to be reset was strange.

Let me know and, again, thanks!

This is a no brainer. Replace that battery.

Already oredered one. I home this fixes it (think it will). Is there any way to figure out (outside of the HP utility) when these are dying?

And thank you for your help!!!

P.S. - Are you sure there's not CR2020 RTC battery? Is that the same as a CMOS battery? Is RTC = Real Time Clock?

This particular EliteBook does actually have a RTC Battery (see pages 34, 39 and 80 respectively), BUT it isn't the same as an actual CMOS battery and IS NOT considered customer-replaceable.

Possibly but they aren't the same in functionality as it has a separate wiring harness and cover than a CMOS battery. Yes, RTC stands for Real Time Clock.

EDIT #1:
And good job on ordering a replacement battery as that likely is your source 😉
