You can use a universal charger, but what battery do you have? There are different cell-type batteries, just ensure the generic/universal has the voltage for your battery. What is the model number of your current battery?

Okay, looked into your laptop... it likely came with a 6-cell battery (optional 9-cell is more expensive, lasts longer, a little larger) which means as long as you get 65W out of the replacement charger you should be okay. HP had a massive recall in the past year or so, you can get the details if your current battery is affected here http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/321957-321957-64295-321838-89315-3764998.html?dnr=1 so look and see just to be safe. As far as replacements go, Amazon seems to have a few for you: http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-B...qid=1349965662&sr=1-1&keywords=hp+550+battery.

I do not mention Amazon as the 'best' or as your only option, it is just what I found in a quick search, you can likely find it elsewhere. Just be sure before you buy it that it is not affected by the recall listed above.
