Hello there,

I bought a HP Compaq 8000 Elite SFF, which came in a small form factor case. I bought an R7 250 and realised that it was a bit to big for the bays at the back of the case. I have considered modding the case by sawing off the part of the bay that you would usually screw the card into. Is this a bad idea?

thanks,

Sounds like a bad one from here. Which dimension are you trying to overarch - height or length? Assuming height because length won't benefit from carving up the case but if it is height, how are you proposing to clamp the card in place?

Second point - a replacement case would be the best shot because the lack of fresh air space in the existing case might end up frying the card.

I ended up just cutting a bit off the case to fit the 250, it runs beyond expectations. The lid won't fit though, thanks for your input, i'll think of something.

Did the power supply have enough juice to power the full sized gpu?

Yes, the power supply had more then enough juice for this low end gpu. Runs great even OC'd.

Assuming you already own that case, measure seven inches from the I/O plate back towards the front of the case. That's the card dimension but I'm struggling to find a layout of the case so I don't know what might get in the way. The 4" card height should be fine so it's the length which might be the problem.

I've already owned the case.
Yes, the lengths what's bothered me. If the card length is exceed 17.5 cm from I/O panel, then it will clash with processor's heat sink. We could remove the VGA's case to gain some space and make it single slot, but then the fan will also be removed :-(

By my conversion from a UK Imperial 7" length, it won't fit that case. I'd also recommendchecking the Wattage and the connections from the power supply unit that came with the original case. You might need 500Watts for your card but I can't see whether it needs a separate power supply - the photo I looked out doesn't show the top of the card. Sounds like a new case is called for.

The power supply is not a problem. XFX Radeon R7 250 Core Edition have max TDP 65W.
I have a friend who own Dell Optiplex 780 which have PSU 235W, the card just run fine.

The card i bought, the ASUS Radeon R7 250 1GB Graphic Card R7250-1GD5 specifically and it didn't fit. Your card however doesn't seem to have the same space limitations. If it's cheap, give it a shot?
