Hello guys. I got a new Hp Compaq 8000 Elite for free. I want to upgrade it for gaming, programming and video editing.
The specs are:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 8400 3.0 ghz
RAM: 4GB ( 2X2GB)
PSU: 240W
Storage: 250GB
I want to add a GPU since it doesn't have one but I am limited of the power supply and the space so I need a low profile GPU. I want to add more ram but some pages say it supports max 8GB and some 16GB. Also I want to add a better CPU. WIll a Intel Core 2 Quad be a problem since it has a 240W PSU. And will it be a problem if I add another HDD or SSD alongside with the 250GB ? I've seen some people on youtube who managed to add a better PSU but I don't know how. I would appreciate if someone of you gives me detailed answers and instructions of my questions. Thank you.

Solution
8 GB will be max for memory.

As far as the system goes any money you would put into it would be far more than the system is really worth.

And you will be very limited in what PSU's you can use, both model and wattage.

It would be fine for what it was designed to be, a typical workstation type machine, would be fine for email, web browsing etc.

You won't get any sort of gaming performance out of such an old machine as far as today's games go, even with a Core 2 Quad.

The platform is just too dated as a whole.

I recommend not throwing any sort of money at it and use it as it is and get something or build something that is more up to date if you want to play games etc.

Any money you would spend on that would be better spent towards...

Here what you can build NOW and it would be faster and better than anything you could do with that machine. And that's running off onboard graphics. You can play games on this, and some newer AAA games would be playable.

I have an old LGA 775 box, with that CPU and believe me it's just not worth putting the money into it today.

And mine isn't a prebuild, it's my old machine that I built way back.

The platform is holding you back....

PSU, graphics cards etc. If you can find a reasonable PSU that will fit in the case. THAT would have to buy NEW.

Can't really do much with it, not THAT system.

If it was a full sized case etc maybe.

Not even getting into the non existent airflow in that case.

Start putting in Quad Core CPU's and Graphics cards and overheating will be a problem.

Yeah... YT....

Those people aren't actually using those machines. Like NONE of them.

They just do things to get views on YT.

It's just not going to be like you think.

Would be better than the onboard graphics by a long shot.

Good for OLD GAMES....

Like 10 YO games.

Wouldn't even think about anything newer like a few years old as the GT 710 isn't a gaming card.

A friend of mine has some low profile gpus. I'll try one of those and see what happens. Of course I'm not going to play new games. Maybe I'll upgrade the graphic and leave everything else as it is and start saving money for a new build.Thank you for your time and patience. Have a nice day.

I think you would be a lot happier in the long run saving you money towards a newer build. :)
