hello! i have a hp compaq 8300 elite tower with i3 3220! can i replace the i3 with i5 2400? because my friend he gonna gift it to me! and if does work do i need a specific bios update??
so it will work normally without any bios update and it will not causes problems with ram because my 4gb on my pc working at 1600mhz and the i5 2400 only support 1333mhz ??On the same socket and chipset, your cpu is newer than his, you should not need a bios update.
But you will need a new cooler though, assuming you haven't changed it. 55w TDP is a good deal lower than 95w.

A few models to pick from - whichever is cheaper for you.
i saw a lot of hp 8300 sff for sale with i5 2400 so i guess the bios will automatically under clock the ram to work with cpu ! for the cooler i think im gonna buy the coolermaster hyper 212 evo ! its should be enough right?I'd leave it be until you experience BSODs or other crashes. While 1600mhz is considered overclocked ram to the 2400, it may still work with your current settings - no way to know until you try it out.
IF it doesn't, then you would go into bios, use XMP and clock the ram down to 1333mhz.
You'll still need a new cooler, as your stock one won't be able to keep up with an I5 2400.
[OMITTED] No need to bother with it, UNTIL it gives you trouble.i saw a lot of hp 8300 sff for sale with i5 2400 so i guess the bios will automatically under clock the ram to work with cpu ! for the cooler i think im gonna buy the coolermaster hyper 212 evo ! its should be enough right?
From my years of experience, if a board/cpu isn't made to run at the speed of the memory you have, the memory will indeed automatically run at a lower clock speed on boot. I've worked on many HP business class PC's in my previous job and I'd often stick 1333mhz speed memory in and it would auto-clock to 1066 or whatever it wanted to run at.No, it won't automatically under clock, you will have to do it yourself. No need to bother with it, UNTIL it gives you trouble.
