Hi,
I recently purchased the above computer (refurbished/open box...I know, I know...) via Newegg and I turned the computer on and get a Non-System Disk Error. I opened up the box and noticed the hard drive has a label on it saying "Wiped". The system was advertised as having Windows 7 65 bit. Suggestions on how to proceed? I understand with open box deals that certain items may be missing (mouse, keyboard, even an internal component, but my impression is that this never actually had Windows 7 on it if the hard drive was wiped. (It did state it was supposed to have Windows 7.) Also, this may not be in the right section...

Anyway, is there some reason for a non-system disk error that I may be overlooking?

Solution
I think that you mean 64 bit.

Does the machine have a Windows 7 sticker on it with an activation code and a Windows 7 version name? Which version? (and don't reply with your activation code).

If it does have that sticker, download the 64 bit version of that specific Windows 7 version (probably Home Premium) as an ISO disk image from (the authorized online distributor at no cost) Digital River and burn it to a DVD or make a USB installer stick using THIS TOOL and instructions.

Then boot from the disk or USB stick and see if there is already an installation that just needs a repair or if you need to do a clean installation. You would also need to download all the drivers from HP to do a clean install.

Awesome! There is an activation code. It says Windows 7 Pro for Refurb PCs. (Not sure how that might be different than just Windows 7 Pro.) I had been looking for an option to install/reinstall the OS. I'll update after it's download and hopefully installed. The prompt help is *massively* appreciated.

Yes, the download the Windows 7 Pro x64 install disk from that link and use it to do the install. For Windows 7 the Pro x64 disk works for all versions -- retail, OEM, etc.
