I recently came into possession of a HP Compaq DC5800 from an eBay with a few other faulty systems.

There was initially 5 beeps and a red flashing light, indicating the power supply of the system being faulty, but a test on another board and some cleaning of the contacts stopped the issue. But even with a replacement power supply, there is an issue the system persistently has which isn't allowing me to use the system.

The system, more often than not when is plugged powers on and turns off after around 3 to 5 seconds after. After that the system will either sit there and rev the fans up to full speed and do nothing else, or will display the HP logo and boot into the operating system. If the system managed to POST, it will run Windows 10 just fine.Even powering down works flawlessly. But after it works once, it fails to POST again. The first time it refuses to POST, it takes a few power-cycles to make it turn on.

The system's motherboard has an obviously bulging capacitor in between the Northbridge & Southbridge chips, and one less obvious one right next to the actual CPU Socket.

I have tried the obvious stuff, like change and test the Memory, CPU, PSU, BIOS Battery and other components that can be tested in other systems. But all seemingly check out.

If it matters, the system specifications are below if it really matters in this case:

  • Intel Pentium E2160
    2GB DDR2 667Mhz in Dual-Channel
    250GB Seagate HDD
    SATA Optical Drive
    BTX LGA775 HP Motherboard
    240W PSU

I have a feeling the motherboard will have to be replaced, which is no issue but I would rather not spend money on something as old and run down as this, as I plan on using it for occasional use in my work shed. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.
